Oversubscription policy — Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

Priority area spaces:

Up to 8 out of the 120 ‘priority area’ places are available to the top performing boys in the selection test who fulfil all the following criteria:

  1. At the time of test registration, are EITHER in receipt of the Pupil Premium payment OR are classified as ‘looked after’ children or ‘previously looked after’ children. In each case, this must be declared on the CSSE Supplementary Information Form when registering for the tests (evidence will be required).

  2. Achieved a final standardised score of at least 340.

Further places will be offered in descending rank order of marks to the boys up until 120 places have been awarded to priority area applicants (this total includes any places awarded above).

Out of priority area:

Up to 2 out of these places are available to the top performing boys in the selection test who fulfil all the following criteria regardless of their location:

  1. At the time of test registration, are EITHER in receipt of the Pupil Premium payment OR are classified as ‘looked after’ children or ‘previously looked after’ children. In each case, this must be declared on the CSSE Supplementary Information Form when registering for the tests (evidence will be required).

  2. Achieved a final standardised score of at least 368.

The remaining places from the 30 will then be offered in descending rank order of marks to the boys scoring highest in the selection test.

King Edward VI Grammar School (KEGS) is a boys’ grammar school with mixed sixth form. The school is situated in Chelmsford, Essex and became an academy in 2011. 

KEGS gained a specialism in science in 2004 and gained leading edge status in 2003 (this was renewed in 2006). It also specialises in languages. The school is consistently ranked in the top 50 schools in the country in national examination league tables.

Exam Information

Exam style — The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE).

Exam topics:

  • English and Verbal Reasoning

  • Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Exam length — 2 × 1 hour exams (plus 10 minutes reading time).

Qualifying score —  Changes each year.

In 2016, the lowest qualifying score was 332 (or 350 outside the priority area).

Other exam information:

  • The English paper will consist of comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, creative/extended writing, and applied reasoning (literacy and verbal). 

  • The Mathematics paper will consist of questions consistent with KS2 National curriculum and applied reasoning (mathematical/non-verbal).

  • The overall score will have a 50:50 weighting - English (50%) and Mathematics (50%).

  • Score will be aggregated and mathematically standardised for each candidate.
