  2. Practising Catholic girls living in the following parishes, whose application is supported by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest: Our Lady of Lourdes, Leigh-on-Sea; St. Helen’s, Westcliff-on-Sea; Sacred Heart, Southend- on-Sea; St. Teresa’s, Rochford; St. George’s, Shoebury; St. Peter’s, Eastwood; St. John Fisher, Prittlewell; Holy Family, South Benfleet; Our Lady of Ransom, Rayleigh and Our Lady of Canvey, Canvey Island.

  3. Other practising Catholic girls whose application is supported by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest.

  4.  Baptised Catholics whose application is not supported by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest.

  5. Other children in public care or who were previously in public care.

  6. Girls of the Eastern Orthodox Church and whose normal place of residence lies within the priority area whose application is supported by their priest.

  7. Practising Christian girls attending Catholic Primary schools, whose application is supported in writing by their Minister.

  8. Practising Christian girls whose normal place of residence lies within the priority area and whose application is supported in writing by their Minister.

  9. Non-Christian girls whose normal place of residence lies within the priority area and whose application is supported in writing by their local religious leader

  10. Applications from girls who do not fall into the above categories. 

Up to 63 selective places will be offered to girls who have passed the 11+ Exam Selective Test as administered by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex and whose normal place of residence lies within the priority area. If two or more girls tie for the final selective place, then it will be awarded using the oversubscription criteria.

School Summary

St Bernard’s High School was founded in 1910 and is a Roman Catholic, partially selective girls’ school in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex with a mixed sixth form. The school specialises in the arts and science. It became an academy in 2011.

The school produces consistently high GCSE and A-Level results. In recent years, Year 11 students at St Bernard’s achieved a Progress 8 figure of 0.89, the highest score in Southend; this score placed St Bernard’s in the top 100 schools in the country.

Exam style — The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE).

Exam topics:

  • English and Verbal Reasoning

  • Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Exam length — 2 × 1 hour exams (plus 10 minutes reading time).

Qualifying score —  303 (in past years a score of above 310 has ensured a place).

Other exam information:

  • The English paper will consist of comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, creative/extended writing, and applied reasoning (literacy and verbal). 

  • The Mathematics paper will consist of questions consistent with KS2 National curriculum and applied reasoning (mathematical/non-verbal).

  • The overall score will have a 50:50 weighting - English (50%) and Mathematics (50%).

  • Score will be aggregated and mathematically standardised for each candidate.
