11 Plus Exam Pass Mark and Target Score

  • The pass mark for each year is decided after the tests have been marked.

  • The overall score of the two papers will have a 50:50 weighting.

Other Exam information

  • Students will sit two papers, each lasting around 60 minutes.

  • One paper will consist of English comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, creative/extended writing, and verbal reasoning.

  • The other paper will consist of questions consistent with KS2 National curriculum for mathematics and non-verbal reasoning

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to St Thomas More High School?

Applications to sit the entrance exam must be made on the school website over the summer before your child begins Year 6. You can register here.

St Thomas More High School does have a catchment area which gives priority based on location and distance from the school. It covers the following postcodes: SS0, SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4, SS5, SS6, SS7, SS8 and SS9. Entry to the school is based firstly on the scores achieved in the 11+ tests.

How Does Place Allocation Work?

Where qualifying applications exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Up to 30 places will be offered to boys who have passed the 11+ Exam Selective Test as administered by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (of which the school is a founder member), and whose normal place of residence lies within the postcode areas of SS0, SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4, SS5, SS6, SS7, SS8 and SS9. 

  2. “Looked after” boys from Catholic families and boys who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted by Catholic families (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order).

  3. Baptised, practising Catholic boys living in the parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes, Leigh on Sea; St. Helen’s, Westcliff on Sea; Sacred Heart, Southend on Sea; St. Georges, Shoebury; St. Peter’s, Eastwood; St. John Fisher, Prittlewell; St. Teresa’s, Rochford; Holy Family, South Benfleet; Our Lady of Ransom, Rayleigh and Our Lady of Canvey, Canvey Island.

  4. Baptised Catholic boys.

  5. Boys who attend an Assisi Catholic Trust Primary school, namely Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School and Nursery, Leigh on Sea; St. Helen’s Catholic Primary School, Westcliff on Sea; Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Nursery, Southend on Sea; St. Georges Catholic Primary School, Shoeburyness; St. Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, Rochford; Holy Family Catholic Primary School, South Benfleet; Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Primary School, Rayleigh and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Canvey Island.

  6. Other “looked after” boys and boys who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted by families.

  7. Catechumens and members of an Eastern Christian Church.

  8. Children of other Christian denominations whose membership is evidenced by a minister of religion.

  9. Any other children, whose families desire a Catholic education for their son.
