  • The pass mark for each year is decided after the tests have been marked.

Other Exam information

  • Students will sit 2x 60-minute exams, followed by a 40-minute writing exercise.

  • The English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning tests are multiple-choice with a separate answer sheet.

  • The first test will be an English and Maths paper. Each section will include a 5-minute practice exercise followed by a 25-minute test. The English section will involve a comprehension exercise as well as some additional questions drawn from a set designed to test literacy skills.

  • The second test will be the reasoning paper. It will take about 1 hour, including the practice sections and questions. It will contain a verbal reasoning section and a non-verbal reasoning section of roughly the same length. The non-verbal reasoning will be split into short sections, administered and timed individually.

  • Finally, there will also be a writing exercise. 40 minutes will be allowed for the writing task, including 10 minutes planning time.

How to Apply for 11 Plus (11+) Entry to The Skinners’ School?

Applications to sit the entrance exam must be made on the school website over the summer before your child begins Year 6. You can register here.

You must also formally apply for a place at the school before midnight on the 31st of October (when your child is in Year 6) to be considered. You can find out more about applying for secondary schools in your local area here.

Is The Skinners’ School part of a Consortium?

The Skinners’ School uses the Kent Test alongside all other grammar schools which fall under the Kent County Council.

Does The Skinners’ School have a catchment area?

The Skinners’ School does have a catchment area, which is made up of an inner and outer area. The inner area consists of the area three miles of the school measured by straight line distance, plus the following named parishes:

  • Edenbridge Goudhurst Hadlow

The outer area is defined as being outside the West Kent Area described above, but within the mainland of the United Kingdom.

Entry to the school is based firstly on the scores achieved in the 11+ tests.

How Does Place Allocation Work?

Where qualifying applications exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

140 places are allocated to students resident in the inner area.

20 places are allocated to students resident in the outer area.

Inner Area

  1. Up to 8 places for pupils, from the defined West Kent Area, registered in that academic year for the Pupil Premium.

  2. Up to 132 places to other pupils from the defined West Kent Area, prioritised as follows. Those living in the West Kent Area with a 11+ score of 360 or more, ranked in order of 

    1. Siblings attending the school at the time of application; 

    2. Sons of members of staff with at least two years’ service at the time application for admission is made, or if the member of staff has been recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. 

    3. Those living the shortest distance from the school.

Outer Area

    1. Up to 2 places for pupils, from outside  the defined West Kent Area, registered in that academic year for the Pupil Premium.

    2. Up to 18 places to other pupils from outside the defined West Kent Area, prioritised as follows. Those living in the West Kent Area with an 11+ score of 360 or more, ranked in order of 

      1. Siblings attending the school at the time of application; 

      2. Sons of members of staff with at least two years’ service at the time application for admission is made, or if the member of staff has been recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. 

      3. Those living the shortest distance from the school.
