The 11 Plus test papers we’ve shared above are in a similar style to those typically delivered as 11 Plus assessments by Dame Alice Owen’s School.

About the School

Address — Dame Alice Owen’s School, Dugdale Hill Lane, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, EN6 2DU

Type of school — Mixed grammar school

Cost — Free

Pupils in school — 1400+

Places available in year 7 —  200 (of which 65 are selective)

Average applicants per place — 4 or more

Catchment area —  Dame Alice Owen’s School’s catchment area places priority on location and distance from the school.

In order to be considered under the school’s Entrance Exam and/or Music Test criteria, your child’s permanent home address must be within one of the listed areas below by the date of registration and also at the date of application. Children from outside of these areas are not eligible to be considered under these criteria and therefore cannot take our tests.

Catchment Area.

Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. Children looked after and children who were previously looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted.

  2. Children who were previously looked after (in state care) outside of England, but ceased to be so because they were adopted.

  3. The twenty-two children whose permanent home address is closest to the School.

  4. Children who have a sibling attending the school at the date of application.

  5. Children demonstrating musical aptitude as determined by the Governors' Assessment Procedure (not more than 10 places).

  6. Up to 65 children selected by academic ability, having taken the two parts of the Governors' Entrance Examination. Of these we will admit:

    • As many children from the Islington Priority Area as, when added to the number from that area already admitted under other criteria, will ensure that at least 20 children are admitted from Islington.

    • As many children from the non-Islington Local Priority Areas as, when added to the number from Islington already admitted under the paragraph above, will total not more than 65 children.

  7. Children of Staff.

  8. Children whose permanent home address is closest to the School at the date of application.

  • English

  • Mathematics

Exam length — 3x 1 hour exams

Pass mark — Changes each year.

  • The verbal reasoning test takes approximately one hour to deliver and is provided by GL Assessment.

  • The English test is a one-hour comprehension paper which includes an extended writing piece. This exam is written internally by the school.

  • The mathematics test is a one-hour paper which is also written internally by the school.
