Type of school β€” All-girls’ grammar school

Cost β€” Free

Pupils in school β€” 1500+

Places available in year 7 β€” 190+

Average applicants per place β€” 3 or more

Catchment area β€”  Invicta Grammar School does have a catchment area which is based on distance from the school.

Oversubscription policy β€” Before the application of oversubscription criteria, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1.  Children in Local Authority Care.

  2. Current Family Association – a brother or sister attending the school when the child starts.

  3. Medical, Health and Special Access Reasons – medical, health, and special access reasons will be applied in accordance with the school’s legal obligations, in particular those under the Equality Act 2010.

  4. Children in receipt of pupil premium.

  5. Children for a permanent member of staff.

  6. All other children by distance from the school.

School Summary

Invicta Grammar School is an all-girls grammar school based in Maidstone, Kent. It was previously known as Maidstone School for Girls or Maidstone Technical High School for Girls. The school has a large attached coeducational sixth form which accepts both boys and girls.  It became an academy in 2011.

Invicta specialises in Business, Mathematics, Computing and Languages. Exam results are consistently outstanding with 80% achieving A*/B grades at A Level and 67% 9-7 grades at GCSE in recent years. They are the best school in Maidstone based on exam results.

Exam Information

Exam style β€”GL Assessment/The Kent Test

Exam topic:

  • Reasoning

    • Verbal, non-verbal and spatial

  • English and maths

  • Creative writing

Exam length β€” 2 x 1 hour exams + a 40-minute writing exercise.

Pass rate β€” In recent years, 15,000+ applicants took the Kent test; only 6,500 passed.

Other exam information:

  • The reasoning, English and maths tests are multiple-choice with a separate answer sheet.

  • The first test will be an English and Maths paper. Each section will include a 5 minute practice exercise followed by a 25 minute test. The English section will involve a comprehension exercise as well as some additional questions drawn from a set designed to test literacy skills.

  • The second test will be the reasoning paper. It will take about 1 hour, including the practice sections and questions. It will contain a verbal reasoning section and a non-verbal reasoning section of roughly the same length. The non-verbal reasoning will be split into short sections, administered and timed individually.

  • Finally, there will also be a writing exercise which will not be marked but may be used by a local headteacher panel as part of the headteacher assessment stage of the process. 40 minutes will be allowed for the writing task, including 10 minutes planning time.

Scores:

  • Your child will get three standardised scores (one for English, one for maths and one for reasoning) and a total (aggregate) score.

  • Standardisation is a statistical process which compares your child's performance with the average performance of other children in each test. A slight adjustment is made to take account of each child's age so that the youngest are not at a disadvantage.

Pass mark:

To qualify, children needed a total score of 332 or more, with no single score lower than 108. Test scores range from 69 to 141. The highest possible total score is 423.

If your child did not reach this threshold score and their primary school referred their case to the local Head Teacher Assessment Panel, the panel will have looked at their achievement in school and examples of their work, including the writing task completed on the day, before a final decision was made.

Please note that a score of over 332 does NOT mean your child is guaranteed a place at your chosen school.

Oversubscription policy β€”  Candidates will only be considered eligible for admission if they are deemed to be of selective ability as a result of the testing process. There is no predetermined pass mark, instead places will be allocated in rank order.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. β€œLooked after Children/Previously Looked after Children” who have met the qualifying standard.

School Summary

Adams’ Grammar School was founded in 1656 by William Adams, a wealthy member of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers (hence its name). It is one of the UK’s top grammar schools with common league table topping exam results. The school is one of only 38 boarding schools in the UK and is among a very small group of selective, state funded, boarding schools. This means that you only pay the fees of boarding if your child attends the schools; all education is free.

Boy’s can choose to either board or attend the day school and girls can join for the sixth form (ages 16-18) only.

Back in 2018 the school changed its name from Adams’ Grammar School (AGS) to Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School.
