Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, eligible students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. School Summary

St Ambrose College was established in 1946 and is an all-boys, Roman Catholic grammar school in Altrincham, Cheshire. The school became an academy in 2012 and specialises in maths and computing. The entire school was rebuilt in 2012 after becoming an academy. 

The school’s sports facilities include a swimming pool, sports hall and gym. Sport is central to the school’s extracurricular activities. The main games are rugby, cricket and cross-country, but there are many others. Drama is strong at the school with a major production each year as well as other events. Boys are actively involved in the liturgical life of the school.  Music, too, is strong with a fine choir, who have taken part in recitals in Cathedrals in Chester, Norwich, Worcester and York Minster. 

Most students go on to a Russell Group University, a number to Oxbridge.

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School (also known as DCGS, Challoner's Boys or Challoner's) was founded in 1624 after Robert Chaloner left money in his will to establish a grammar school in Amersham. The school is now an all-boys grammar school with a mixed sixth form. The school became an academy in 2011. 

The school is one of the UK’s top performing grammar schools, well known for producing outstanding GCSE results. Dr Challoner’s consistently places among the top 50 state schools in Britain with around 20 students a year winning places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities and a similar number going on to medical school. 

Dr Challoner’s specialises in science, maths and languages. It is also a leading science school.

Exam style — CEM Select

Exam types:

  • CEM Select (verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning)

Exam lengths Unknown.

Pass mark — There is no fixed pass mark for the exam. On completion of the exams, the candidates will receive an age-adjusted or standardized score.

Other exam information:

  • The CEM Select is an online assessment that assesses skills on verbal, non-verbal and numerical reasoning.

  • Confidential reports and references from the candidate’s current school head will be required to see the candidate’s overall performance and potential over the years.

Exam Information

Exam style — ISEB Common Pre-Test.

Exam types:

  • English (reading comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation).

  • Maths (in line with the National Curriculum up to Year 5).

  • Verbal reasoning (common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer, number codes, etc.).

  • Non-verbal reasoning (shape analogies, classes like, horizontal codes, etc.).

Exam length — 4 exams totalling 2.5 hours.

Pass mark —  There is not a fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the test, all candidates receive an age-adjusted and standardised score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each section of the test.

If a child does well in their 11+ pre-test, they will usually be offered a place, contingent on them then passing the common entrance exam at 13+.

Other exam information

  • The tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning separately.

  • All tests are completed online.

  • All questions are in multiple-choice format.

  • The English test takes 25 minutes, mathematics 50 minutes, non-verbal reasoning 32 minutes and verbal reasoning 36 minutes.

  • The four tests can either be taken together or at separate times. They can be taken in the candidate's own school, at the senior school for which he or she is entered or at an independent testing centre.

  • All candidates are registered by the senior school(s) for which they are entered.

  • Test results are available to all senior schools which register the same candidate and therefore a candidate need only sit the tests once for a range of senior schools.

  • An assessment fee of £24 applies and is non-refundable.

About the School

 

Address — The Royal Grammar School, Amersham Road, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, HP13 6QT

Type of school — Boys’ grammar school with optional boarding

Cost — Education is free at The Royal Grammar School. However, boarding costs are paid for.

Pupils in school — 1400+

Places available in year 7 —  18+ day places and 10+ boarding places.

Average applicants per place — Unknown but only around 30% of applicants pass the exam.

Catchment area — The Royal Grammar School does have a catchment area.

Oversubscriptions policy — Candidates will only be considered eligible for admission if they meet the required qualifying score of 121 in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT).

Boys who qualify and also have a statement of Special Educational Needs that names the school will be admitted prior to the application of the over-subscription criteria.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of day places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after and previously looked after boys.

  2. Boys living in the catchment area of the school who qualify for Free School Meals (FSM). Boys must be in receipt of FSM on the date that registration for testing closes (31 October). Evidence will be required.

  3. Brothers of boys who are on the roll of the school at the time an application is made, and who are expected to be on the roll of the school at the time of the proposed admission.

  4. Boys living in the catchment area of the school.

  5. Sons of a member of staff where a) the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made, and/or b) the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.

  6. Once the rules have been applied, any further places will be offered in distance order using straight line distance between the family’s normal home address and the nearest pupil entrance to the school offering the closest first. 

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of boarding places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after or previously looked after boys.

  2. Sons of members of the UK Armed Forces who qualify for Ministry of Defence financial assistance with the cost of boarding school fees.

  3. Boys with a boarding need, defined for the purposes of this Policy as:

    a. Boys at risk or with an unstable home environment

    b. Boys whose parents are members of the UK Armed Forces, Crown Servants, or key workers (e.g. charity workers, people working for voluntary service organisations, teachers, law enforcement officers and medical staff working abroad) whose work dictates that they spend much of the year overseas or working unsocial hours.

  4. 11+ score.

Where the distance criterion produces an absolute tie, each boy will be admitted.

School Summary

The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe (RGSHW) is an all-boys grammar school with optional boarding that was established in 1548. The school specialises in languages, maths and computing. They have boarding provision on site for up to 70 students and became an academy in 2011.

In recent years, Royal Grammar school achieved around 72% grades 9-7 for GCSE’s.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after or previously looked after boys who have scored a mark above 115.

  2. Boys eligible for Pupil Premium (P.P.) or Service Premium (S.P.) who have scored a mark of 115-120 in the Admissions Test and who reside in the Catchment Area.

  3. Other boys eligible for P.P. or for S.P. who have achieved the qualifying mark of 121 or more in the Admissions Test and who reside in the Catchment Area.

  4.  Brothers of siblings in Years 7-12 who are on the roll of the School at the time allocations are made and who will be on the roll of the School at the time of the proposed admission.

  5. Boys who have exceptional medical or social needs which can only be met at the School supported by evidence as set out in the County Scheme. See paragraph 8 below.

  • These two examinations are done on the assessment day. Common entrance examinations are completed at a later date for those wishing to apply for a scholarship or receive an offe4r stating ‘subject to common entrance’.

  • During the assessment day, a group interview will take place. Non-assessed workshops will also take place, allowing the girls to get to know each other and also get a glimpse of life at the school.

  • The common entrance examinations are set by ISEB.

Exam style — School’s own exam and CEM Select.

Exam types:

  • English

  • CEM Select

Exam length — 2x 1 hour exams.

Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the tests, all candidates receive an age-standardized score.

Other exam information:

  • The CEM Select is an online test that examines verbal, non-verbal and numerical reasoning.

  • The school’s own English paper assesses only creative writing.

  • The entrance examinations are held in the January of year 6.

  • Applicants will also sit an interview with the headteacher as part of the admissions process.

  • A report from the child’s current school will be required.

  • The registration deadline is usually towards the end of November of year 6.

Oversubscription policy — Before the application of oversubscription criteria, eligible students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which names the school and who have passed the assessment will be admitted. As a result of this, the published admissions number will be reduced accordingly.

Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be determined as follows:

  1. A child in care or an adopted child.

  2. Children Eligible for the Pupil Premium at the time of the test.

  3. Children of staff working at the school at the time of the test (subject to meeting the criteria in the Admissions Code).

School Summary

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School was established in 1915 and is an all-girls grammar school in Torquay, Devon. The school became an academy in 2011. It specialises in humanities (geography, history and religions education). It was of one of the first schools in the UK to achieve Humanities Specialist School status. 

The school is part of the South West Academic Trust and works with other high-performing grammar schools and Exeter University. The school also works with the local boys’ grammar school to extend the curriculum for both schools.

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School consistently achieves top exam results and is often found in the top 20 state schools in the UK.

Langley Grammar School was established in 1956 and is a co-educational, selective grammar school in Langley. It has a large sixth form and is designated as a National teaching School. In 2012 it became an academy.

Pass mark —  A standardised score of 111 is the minimum score required to be eligible for consideration for admissions.

Other exam information — Both exams will cover a combination of all topics and consist of multiple choice style questions. Both papers include verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths.

Upton Court Grammar School uses the same 11+ Entrance Test as the other grammar schools in the Slough Consortium (Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School). If you are applying to multiple schools in this category, your child only needs to take the tests once.
