Type of school — Boys grammar school

Headteacher — Mr N J Cole

Cost — Free

Pupils in school — 1262

Places available in year 7 —  186

Average applicants per place — 10 or more.

Please note approximately 1500 children sit the test for Wilson’s Grammar School each year.

Catchment area —  Wilson’s Grammar School does not have a catchment area but the school states:

“For practical reasons your son shouldn’t have a journey of more than an hour in order that he may fully participate in the wider life of the school. However, our admissions criteria are not based on catchment areas, post codes or distance criteria except in the case of determining the last places to be offered where two or more candidates hold the same standardised score.”

Over-subscription policy —  Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Looked after children or previously looked after children by rank order of standardised score in the entrance tests.

  2. 10 places for boys eligible to receive Free School Meals by rank order of standardised score in the entrance tests.

  3. Remaining places will be allocated to boys according to their position in the rank order of standardised score in the entrance tests.

School Summary

Wilson’s Grammar School was established in 1615 and is one of the oldest state schools in the country. It is an all-boys grammar school and became an academy in 2011.

Wilson’s Grammar School constantly appears in the UK’s top 10 schools for both GCSE and A-Level results. The school specialises in maths, computing and media. Boys at the school are enrolled onto a free vocal or instrumental tuition course in Year 7.

Ofsted rated this school as ‘outstanding’ in 2007. Find their reports here.

Compare this school’s performance with other local schools here.

Exam Information

Exam style — Selective Eligibility Test (SET) for the Sutton Schools and Wilson’s Grammar School second stage entrance test.

The schools have not announced their exam provider in order to make the exams fair for all candidates.

Exam types:

  • English

  • Mathematics

Exam length — 40-50 minutes each.

Pass mark — The pass mark is decided by the school after the tests have been marked.

Please note that parents are not informed of the exact score their child achieved. They are only told whether their child has passed.

Children who are unsuccessful will sometimes be informed of their marks.

Other exam information —

  • There are two stages of exams.

  • Maths and English exams are taken back to back on the same day.

  • In the first stage of exams, all questions are multiple choice in both the English and Maths exams.

  • The second stage consists of an extended English writing task and a standard Maths paper.

  • Candidates record their answers on a separate answer sheet.

  • The scores from all tests are combined to create the overall entrance test score. The rank order of the entrance tests will be determined on the basis of the aggregate scores of the SET and the two elements of the second stage Entrance Examination for Wilson’s School in the ratio 1:2:2.

Scores will be standardised.

Please note that candidates must achieve the minimum qualifying mark in the SET (first stage of testing) to be invited back to sit the second stage tests.

Candidates must pass all exams to be eligible for entry to Wilson’s Grammar School.
