Exam length — 72 minutes (CAT4).

The CAT4 test is composed of 8 short tests assessing the following subsections of the four areas above:

  1. Figure Classification (10 mins)

  2. Figure Matrices (10 mins)

  3. Verbal Classification (8 mins)

  4. Verbal Analogies (8 mins)

  5. Number Analogies (10 mins)

  6. Number Series (8 mins)

  7. Figure Analysis (9 mins)

  8. Figure Recognition (9 mins)

Pass mark —  There is no fixed pass mark for the exam.

Other exam information:

  • Assessment applications must be submitted by the December of year 6, or November if the pupil is applying for bursary assistance.

  • Entrance exams take place in the January of year 6.

  • Reports from the pupil’s current school will be required.

  • Following the entrance exam, pupils may be invited to participate in an activity day to interact with teachers and other pupils. The interactions will be assessed and taken into account for admissions.

The catchment area is split into two sections:

  1. Inner Priority Area (pupils who live less than 10 km from Tiffin School).

  2. Outer Priority Area (pupils who live between 10-14 km from the school).

Over-subscription policy —  Where qualifying applications for admission exceed the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:

  1. Boys with Statements of Special Educational Needs or an Education Health and Care Plan which names Tiffin School specifically.

  2. Looked after or previously looked after boys who live within the Inner Priority Area (whose mark in the Stage Two Test is higher than or equal to the 300th ranked mark of all applicants who sat the Stage Two Test).

  3. Boys whose mark in the Stage Two Test is higher than or equal to the 300th ranked mark of all applicants who sat the Stage Two Test AND live in the Inner Priority Area AND qualify for Pupil Premium funding.

  4. Boys who scored highest in the Stage Two Test AND live in the Inner Priority Area. 

  5. Boys who scored highest in the Stage Two Test AND live in the Outer Priority Area. 

  6. Boys who scored highest in the Stage Two Test AND live outside the Priority Areas.

Tiffin School was established in 1880 and is a selective all-boys grammar school in Kingston, London. It became an academy in 2011 and specialises in languages and the arts.

 The school’s results are consistently high, with an average in recent years of approximately 80% of all GCSE grades at 9-7, and 85% of all A Level grades at A*-B.

Exam style — ISEB Common Pre-Test.

Exam types:

  • English (reading comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation).

  • Maths (in line with the National Curriculum up to Year 5).

  • Verbal reasoning (common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer, number codes, etc.).

  • Non-verbal reasoning (shape analogies, classes like, horizontal codes, etc.).

Exam length — 4 exams totalling 2.5 hours.

Pass mark —  There is not a fixed pass mark for the admissions test. On completion of the test, all candidates receive an age-adjusted and standardised score. The average score is 100. Schools will also be able to see each child’s score and the time taken for each section of the test.

If a child does well in their 11+ pre-test, they will usually be offered a place, contingent on them then passing the common entrance exam at 13+.

Other exam information

  • The tests cover English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning separately.

  • All tests are completed online.

  • All questions are in multiple-choice format.

  • The English test takes 25 minutes, mathematics 50 minutes, non-verbal reasoning 32 minutes and verbal reasoning 36 minutes.

  • The four tests can either be taken together or at separate times. They can be taken in the candidate's own school, at the senior school for which he or she is entered or at an independent testing centre.

  • All candidates are registered by the senior school(s) for which they are entered.

  • Test results are available to all senior schools which register the same candidate and therefore a candidate need only sit the tests once for a range of senior schools.

  • An assessment fee of £24 applies and is non-refundable.

Baptised Catholic girls, from a Practising Catholic family (evidenced by a Certificate of Catholic Practice from their Parish Priest) and who have made their First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church (normally evidenced by a remembrance of First Holy Communion) in rank order beginning with the highest.

  4. Baptised Catholic girls in rank order (in the entrance test) beginning with the highest.

  5. Girls of Other Christian Denominations in rank order (in the entrance test) beginning with the highest.

  6. Other Looked After girls.

  7. Other girls in receipt of Pupil Premium.

School Summary

St. Michael’s Catholic Grammar School was founded in 1908 under the trusteeship of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus. It is a Catholic, all-girls, selective grammar school in Barnet, North London.

It became a Voluntary Aided Grammar School in September 1958.  Boys were allowed to join the school’s 6th Form from 2009.

Other exam information — Each exam will cover a combination of all topics. The paper will be split into sections including maths, comprehension, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.
